The practice of using an eye design as a talisman against negative influences is an ancient custom. The horror style sometimes follows the lead of this tradition. The eye also stands for revelation – it is the “window to the soul”. As an organ of perception it is linked to the light.

The eye of Horus or Ra, which represents the sun, is also a very popular tattoo – it’s a magic symbol that represents a desire for regeneration and is depicted anywhere by the Egyptians. The ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic for the deity was the eye which, in hieroglyphics means to see and also to create.

Visualisation is the ability to create a mental image, a potential that’s within all of us and that we use all the time whether consciously or not. In this way the eye can be a symbol of creativity and self-healing. The eye, like the hand, is common in many cultures and it is always used to symbolise deities. Depicted within a triangle, it becomes the Eye of Providence and “sees all”. Surrounded by rays it is the eternal light.
